Statistics show that in America each of us now consumes an average of one third pound of sugar EVERY DAY.

The per capita consumption of these sweeteners in the USA is about 145 lbs/year and is probably much higher in teenagers/youth that have a high level of consumption of soft drinks. He recommends no more than 150 calories per day from added sugar for a man and no more than 100 calories per day for a woman, about the equivalent of just one can of soda.

Dr. Lustig strongly believes that sugar should be government regulated just as cigarettes and alcohols are, including sugar in a group of substances that we recognize as toxins. Sugar, he says, in the quantities that we are consuming it, is poisoning us and belongs in the same toxin waste basket.

Also, neuroscientist Eric Steiss demonstrated the addictive nature of sugar when he showed that just a sip of a sugary soda lit up the pleasure center of the brain in a manner very similar to cocaine. Sugar causes the release of dopamine, which creates the feeling of euphoria just like a drug.

Sugar is strongly implicated in the epidemics of Obesity and Type II Diabetes. It is also clearly associated with Cardiovascular Disease and Hypertension. It has even been shown to play a role in the development of cancerous tumors.

Here are some research studies:

Jonathan Purnell, M.D., in the OHSU School of Medicine says: "For consumers, our findings support current recommendations that people be conscious of sweeteners added to their drinks and meals and not overindulge on high-fructose, processed foods."

In the study, published online by the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, by Dr Karen L. Teff, PhD says: "Fructose can cause even greater elevations of triglyceride levels in obese insulin-resistant individuals, worsening their metabolic profiles and further increasing their risk for diabetes and heart disease,"

In the study performed by Dr. MyPhuong Le - University of Colorado; and Dr. Julie Johnson - University of Florida published in the journal Metabolism, says: "Fructose is also known to increase uric acid levels that have been implicated in blood pressure, and the High Fructose Corn Syrup-sweetened drinks resulted in a higher uric acid level and a 3 mm Hg greater rise in systolic blood pressure".

Dr. Richard Johnson, a co-author in the study and chief of the Division of Renal Diseases and Hypertension at the University of Colorado, commented, "Although both sweeteners are often considered the same in terms of their biological effects, this study demonstrates that there are subtle differences. Soft drinks containing High Fructose Corn Syrup result in slightly higher blood levels of fructose than sucrose-sweetened drinks."

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention "In the 40 years since the introduction of high-fructose corn syrup as a cost-effective sweetener in the American diet, rates of obesity in the U.S. have skyrocketed. In 1970, around 15 percent of the U.S. population met the definition for obesity; today, roughly one-third of the American adults are considered obese".

Kimber Stanhope, PhD, of the University of California, Davis says: "Our findings demonstrate that several factors associated with an elevated risk for cardiovascular disease were increased in individuals consuming 25 percent of their calories as fructose or high fructose corn syrup, but consumption of glucose did not have this effect."

Additionally our findings provide evidence that the upper limit of 25 percent of daily calories consumed as added sugar as suggested by The Dietary Guidelines for American 2010 may need to be re-evaluated."

Research done by Dr Manal Abdelmalek, MD, MPH, at Duke University Medical Center, published in the Journal of Hepatology in 2008 showed that: "within a small subset of patients, high fructose corn syrup was associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The study goes one step further and links high fructose corn syrup to the progression of liver injury.

Although only a minority of patients' progress to cirrhosis, such patients are at increased risk for liver failure, liver cancer, and the need for liver transplant," she explained."

A Study by Dr Paul Elliott, Ph.D.,  in the School of Public Health at Imperial College London says: "These findings lend support for recommendations to reduce the intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, as well as added sugars and sodium in an effort to reduce blood pressure and improve cardiovascular health.

One possible mechanism for sugar-sweetened beverages and fructose increasing blood pressure levels is a resultant increase in the level of uric acid in the blood. Sugar consumption also has been linked to enhanced sympathetic nervous system activity and sodium retention."

The researchers, led by Malik and senior author Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at HSPH, did a meta-analysis that pooled 11 studies. "The findings showed that drinking one to two sugary drinks per day increased the risk of type 2 diabetes by 26% and the risk of metabolic syndrome by 20% compared with those who consumed less than one sugary drink per month. Drinking one 12-ounce serving per day increased the risk of type 2 diabetes by about 15%."

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: "Nearly 17 percent of children and adolescents ages 2 to 19 in the United States are in the 95 percentile of the BMI-for-age growth charts".

A study by Dr Nalini Ranjit, Ph.D., at the UTHealth School of Public Health. The study will be published in the October 2012 issue of Pediatrics, says: "There is widespread consensus that the increasing consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with high levels of obesity nationwide."

Chen (Liwei Chen, M.D., Ph.D., at Louisiana State University Health Science Center School of Public Health in New Orleans, La., noted that: "American adults consume an average of 2.3 servings (28 ounces) of sugar-sweetened beverages per day."

Sara N. Bleich, PhD, with the Bloomberg School's Department of Health Policy and Management says: "Based on these nationally representative surveys, our study found higher sugar-sweetened beverage consumption also happened to be among populations at greater risk for obesity. There are few signs of improvement over the past decade and the situation seems to become worse among young adults aged 20 to 44."

A study by Poonam Jain, BDS, MS, MPH, published in the May/June 2012 issue of General Dentistry says: "Young adults consume these drinks assuming that they will improve their sports performance and energy levels and that they are 'better' for them than soda. Most of these patients are shocked to learn that these drinks are essentially bathing their teeth with acid."

Walter Willett, of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health says: "The scientific evidence is now clear; soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages are important contributors to obesity in children and adults. Healthier beverage options would allow individuals to make better choices."

Lilian Cheung, lecturer in the Department of Nutrition and editorial director of The Nutrition Source website said: "We need to retrain American tastes away from super-sweet drinks. If we can shift the present American norm back to a lower expectation of sweetness, people will adjust their palates, particularly the younger population."
